Angelina Jolie Turned Down 'Famous Superhero Role' Before Eternals

There is little doubt that fans are looking forward to seeing Angelina Jolie in action as Thena in Eternals. However, this isn't the first time that the Salt star was tempted to play a comic book hero. Jolie revealed she was offered a "famous superhero role" in the past but she decided to turn it down.

It's no secret that Jolie is one of the most highly sought-after actors in Hollywood today. With that in mind, it's actually a surprise that she hasn't appeared in a Marvel Cinematic Universe flick until Eternals.

But why wait until now to join the MCU? Interestingly, it had a lot to do with what the Chloe Zhao film had to offer. In an interview with Empire magazine, Jolie revealed she usually avoids comic book movies but "felt like something else was happening in [Eternals], though. It was very character-driven."

The report further states that Jolie actually turned down a "famous superhero role" in the past. It is then confirmed that she "declined to say which out of respect for the actress who went on to play the character."

It's an interesting revelation considering that fans have been hoping Jolie would join the MCU a lot sooner. But which role was initially offered to the Tomb Raider actress? There are speculations that she was considered for the role of Natasha Romanoff in Iron Man 2. However, Scarlett Johansson eventually took the part that led to several major Marvel movies including Black Widow.

We may have missed out on Jolie playing Black Widow but she still found an MCU role that fit her even better. Jolie will portray Thena in Eternals, which hits theaters on November 5, 2021.
