Nintendo President Hopes the Mario Movie Comes Out by 2020

Last year, there were reports that claimed Illumination Studios would make an animated Super Mario Bros. movie, the first Nintendo film to hit theaters since the disastrous movie of the same name. It looks like that isn't 100% yet as the director of Nintendo says he's hoping to announce the company's partner for this animated project. Whether it's Illumination or another animation studio, the game company is hoping to release this film by 2020.

Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima told Japanese newspaper Kyoto Shimbun (via Game Informer) that he would like the animated Super Mario Bros. movie to hit theaters on 2020 so that it can be out in time for that year's Tokyo Olympics. A lot of people will be coming to the country to watch their respective homeland win, so having a great animated film based on a Japanese icon (who just happens to be Italian) would be a big boon to have.

It's a pretty good time to be a fan of the Koopa-hopping plumber, thanks to the hit game Super Mario Odyssey. The game made Mario's brand of platforming feel fresh again, thanks to varied, open-ended level design and immense replayability. Having a film partially based on the game, or at least take certain elements from it, would be awesome. Frankly, anything would be better than the previous live-action Mario movie.

Will see a Super Mario Bros. movie by 2020? We can only hope.
