Venom is an odd beast and we aren't talking about the character here. The movie got a lot of negative reviews but it also made a ton of money and received plenty of fan support, hence Sony greenlighting a sequel and moving forward with their Spider-Man movie-verse that doesn't have Spider-Man (unless it's animated). However, even those that liked the movie were hoping that it would be R18 since there are certain moments that would have been better if there was gore.
Speaking with LRM Online, director Ruben Fleischer revealed that an unrated version of the film wasn't in the cards and he feels that there's no need for it at this point. This might be shocking to some but considering the number of films that they could crossover with at PG-13, including Tom Holland's Spider-Man, it's easy to see why the move was made.
"I'm proud of the movie we've put out, and I think that the additional material on the DVD adds a little bit of color to the film. I don't feel the need at this point to release an unrated version, I feel like fans seem to really like the movie that we put out."
Hearing Fleischer says this is surprising since unrated versions of superhero films, like Batman V Superman, usually end up pretty popular with fans. Plus, R-rated comic book movies like Logan, Deadpool, and Deadpool 2 made money while also getting a ton of positive reviews. Still, if this is what Sony wants then they've already proven that it will make money.
Venom is available now on Blu-Ray, DVD, and digital stores.
