Star Wars: Squadrons Will Not be a Live-Service Game With Constant Add-Ons

When it was announced that Star Wars: Squadrons would be a multiplayer-focused game about space dogfights, many assumed that it would be filled with microtransactions and constantly get updated. It looks like EA took the Battlefront II controversy seriously as not only will Squadrons not have microtransactions but there won't be a flurry of constant updates either. Apparently, it will launch as a complete multiplayer experience, which is shocking, to be honest.

This isn't just "shocking for EA," but just a surprise in general. Even the most acclaimed multiplayer titles like Overwatch, Destiny 2, and Apex Legends are packed to the brim with constant updates and loot boxes. Motive, the studio working on this game, told GameInformer that add-ons could happen in the future but this will not be a live-service game in any way.

Maybe it's because Star Wars: Squadrons is being released near the end of the current-generation but this is a huge risk since players want their multiplayer games to constantly add new things. We're hoping that this pays off since it could get other developers to make complete, standalone games instead of fixing them later if they launch poorly.

From what we've seen thus far, Squadrons does look like a promising space shooter that scratches the itch of those that miss Rogue Squadron or Jedi Starfighter. Let's hope this is what many fans have been hoping for since we have been in desperate need of a space shooter like this.

Star Wars: Squadrons will be coming out this October on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
