Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker may have signaled the end of the Skywalker era but there's still a lot of questions fans have in regards to certain characters and their fates. Is Jannah really Lando's daughter? Will Finn being Force-sensitive amount to anything? Did Poe Dameron get that kiss from Zorii Bliss? That's what all these books and comics are for (also so that Disney and LucasFilm make a butt-load of money).
Now that Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren #3 has been released, we also have another question answered; why did Kylo Ren need to wear a helmet? The answer is surprisingly simple; because it's intimidating.
After defecting from Luke Skywalker's Jedi Academy, Ben Solo meets with Ren, the original leader of The Knights of Ren, who reveals that he puts on a helmet to intimidate people and nothing more. Ren removes his helmet when he does this, revealing that his face has no major damage and he's actually just as pretty as Ben.
It's kind of a nice callback to The Force Awakens when Kylo Ren unmasked himself to Rey for the first time. Most of us were expecting a damaged individual in the same vein as Darth Vader. He's still damaged, just on the inside.
That might sound petty and immature but this seems to be the comic book's goal, showing that the Dark Side has no real complexities to it. For Pete's sake, Ren means LIGHTSABER! Ben Solo himself is an interesting and conflicted character in Star Wars but most of us can agree that he's just an angry kid who needs some therapy right? This description doesn't take away from his character at all, just pointing out the truth.
