Neil Gaiman Teases Major Changes from the Comics for Netflix's Sandman

There are a lot of expectations for Netflix's adaptation of The Sandman, one of the best comic books ever made. Written by Neil Gaiman for DC's Vertigo brand, the comic book garnered a ton of positive attention and quickly became recognized by many, showing that comic books could tell more serious and thought-provoking stories. It will be interesting to see what the Netflix series is going to be like, though many of us are already expecting some major changes.

Neil Gaiman himself seems to be gearing fans up for some of these changes, speaking with ComicBook.com and talking about how different things are in the year 2020. Gaiman says there are a lot of things he would have done differently had The Sandman been made this year. It's an interesting way to justify the changes, though he could have just said "things in comics don't always translate well to television," but oh well.

"Okay, it is 2020, let's say that I was doing Sandman starting in 2020, what would we do? How would we change things? What gender would this character be? Who would this person be? What would be happening?"

Gaiman also talked about why it took so long for an adaptation of his comic book classic to get the green light. They're pretty much what we expected, with studios feeling that an R-rated movie based on a comic book might not do well. Many studios had a hard time wrapping their heads around how to properly make this but now that Netflix is a thing, it looks like we're finally getting a proper adaptation.

We won't be getting Netflix's The Sandman anytime soon but there is an audio drama coming out soon, so that's something. Let's hope the show is half as good as the comic book series.
