James Gunn Supports Warner Bros. Possibly Releasing the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad

With Zack Snyder's Justice League making the headlines, David Ayer has seemingly hopped on to this bandwagon by stating that an Ayer Cut of his 2016 Suicide Squad film exists and would be easy to make. In fairness to Ayer, news of his movie being cut up so that it would be more viewer-friendly has been making rounds for years now but now that the Snyder Cut is actually coming out, it's easy to see he would lobby for his version to see the light.

Interestingly enough, James Gunn has revealed that he wouldn't mind if Warner Bros. decides to release an Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad before his pseudo-sequel/soft-reboot The Suicide Squad comes out next year.

On Twitter, Gunn was asked by a fan if he would be okay with the Ayer Cut coming out before his version of the group comes to cinemas. Gunn said that he would have no problem if Ayer and Warner Bros. work together to bring this version of the movie out. That's a pretty classy move from the Guardians of the Galaxy director and one that Ayer acknowledged.

Ayer thanked Gunn for being kind and called him "good people," which is always nice to see. DC is essentially trying to bury Ayer's work with Gunn's new movie, despite using some of the same characters and actors, so we would be happy seeing an Ayer Cut. Hopefully, that doesn't disappoint. The same goes for the Snyder Cut.

Suicide Squad can now be purchased on digital stores, while The Suicide Squad is scheduled for an August 2021 release.
