Hideo Kojima Discusses Spider-Man and Why He's Similar to Japanese Superheroes

Spider-Man has always been a worldwide phenomenon, even before Spider-Man: Far From Home came out. Hell, before any of the movies were released, people knew who the character was thanks to his comics being everywhere, along with a number of toys, games, and cartoons. Despite being an American-made creation, Spider-Man tends to appeal to people around the world, even Japan, which already has heroes like Son Goku, Naruto, and Monkey D. Luffy.

Considering how Marvel and DC aren't too popular in Japan, why has a character like Peter Parker appealed to the people there? According to Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima, the character actually has similar origins to Japanese heroes like Kamen Rider. Much like these Super Sentai heroes, Peter's powers were obtained through an accident and he's been struggling to balance his normal life and superhero career since.

It's also worth noting that Kojima loved Spider-Man: Far From Home, which is normal since most people who've seen the film did enjoy it. This isn't a surprise since Kojima does love movies as his Twitter account claims that he is made of 70% movies, which is probably why all of his video games are so cinematic (and have hours of cutscenes).

For those that haven't seen it yet, Spider-Man: Far From Home is now showing in cinemas. The movie is great and Kojima would probably enjoy it.
