Disney Tries to Use Star Wars' #MayThe4th Hashtag to Own Your Tweets

When Disney+ announced that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was coming to the streaming service, fans were initially excited. Sure, the movie isn't that great but it at least would make for an entertainingly long day, especially when you consider we're all still in quarantine and options for fun are limited to television, video games, and maybe some house exercises. Having more things to keep yourself distracted is far from the worst thing in the world.

However, when Disney told fans that if they use the hashtag #MayThe4th to share their favorite Star Wars memories, it wasn't received well. It's one thing to use these tweets for promoting the movies but it's another thing entirely to tell fans "we own your tweets and will use them in any way we want." To be honest, it sounds like something Emperor Palpatine would say if he actually existed.

If they decided to compile the tweets in a video, we're sure that a number of fans would have been pleased. The fact that you're telling them "we own this now" because of a hashtag is just ridiculous. We understand that they might want to avoid some legal issues but this is about Star Wars memories, which is something most movie fans are willing to share anyway. What a mess.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is now available on digital stores. The movie is coming to Disney+ on May 4.
