Why Avengers: Endgame Directors Used Time Travel Even Though It's Cliche

Avengers: Endgame was so fun and emotional that fans were willing to go through a cliche that many movies, TV shows, and video games have visited in the past; time travel. Fans immediately thought this trope would be used after the shocking events of Avengers: Infinity War and, let's be honest here, the writers didn't really have a choice but to use it, given the number of movies planned with these "dead" characters.

In the commentary from the digital version of Endgame, co-director Joe Russo talks about how they conceded to using time travel since their hands were tied. Russo, along with writers Christoper Markus and Stephen McFeely, has admitted that time travel is a "ludicrous notion" but felt that seeing our heroes reunited with characters that were "snapped" away would make for a great moment.

"Ultimately, we realized that, look, time travel doesn't exist. It is a ludicrous notion. It's a construct of genre filmmaking. I think when we all bought in on it was when we realized the emotional scenes that could take place between the characters and the people that they loved that were no longer with them."

Let's just say that they weren't wrong. We still get chills when Alan Silvestri's Portals plays.

While time travel is cheap and lame, there really wasn't anything the writers or directors could do. Their hands were tied since a number of the killed characters had movies planned in advance, like the recent Spider-Man: Far From Home. Now that Marvel has revealed their slate for phase four, it will be interesting to see how they try to top what they did with Infinity War and Endgame.

Avengers: Endgame can now be purchased on digital stores. The Blu-Ray and DVD will be available on August 13.
