Star Wars: Mark Hamill Impressed by Prequels

The response to the Star Wars prequel films has been divisive ever since they were released. Some people do like them to some extent while some hate them and consider the films as the weakest in the franchise. However, there is one notable member of the franchise who has expressed their admiration for the prequels and it's Luke Skywalker himself.

Per Indiewire, in an interview for J. W. Rinzler's book Howard Kazanjian: A Producer's Life, which covers the life of former Lucasfilm Vice President and producer Howard Kazanjian, Mark Hamill expressed his thoughts on the prequel films, which turned out to be favorable.

"I was impressed the prequels had their own identity," he said. "They were criticized because they were exposition-heavy and more cerebral and probably like he said back in 1976, they weren't as commercial. It's a darker story. But in the age of social media, people's voices are amplified, and I'm shocked at how brutal they can be, not just in the case of Star Wars films, but across the board."

The Luke Skywalker actor gave a more affirmative response in terms of the prequel films. After all, it is a subjective discussion so he is free to like them if he wants to and he probably has a more unique perspective about it since he worked on the Star Wars films. He might be right when he said that the prequels have their own identity. If you compare them to the other trilogies, the prequels have a more different tone, storytelling, and themes. Perhaps Hamill resonated with them which is why he liked the films.

However, it is the complete opposite in the case of Marcia Lucas, George Lucas' ex-wife and co-editor of the original trilogy, as she mentioned in the book that she cried after watching The Phantom Menace because she didn't like it. In addition, she also criticized the sequel trilogy saying that Kathleen Kennedy and J.J. Abrams "don't get it."

The Star Wars franchise has been gaining its momentum again thanks to the success of The Mandalorian, in which Hamill reprises his role as Luke Skywalker in the second season finale. There are also several shows and films that are in the works that continue the journey in the galaxy far, far away.
