When She-Ra Princess of Power debut in 1985, it was aimed to target primarily a young female audience just like how He-Man: Masters of the Universe targeted the young male audience. It spawned toys, comics, and, recently, an animated series reboot on Netflix which garnered critical acclaim. Now, it is taking a new leap: live-action series.
Variety has reported that a She-Ra live-action series is currently in development at Amazon. The project is still in the early stages as there is no writer attached at the moment. DreamWorks Animation, who also worked on Netflix's She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, will serve as the executive producer. However, it will be a new, standalone story and it won't be connected at all to the recent animated series. The project, if it gets greenlit from Amazon, will be the first-ever live-action iteration of the character.
The recent Netflix animated series revived the popularity of She-Ra so it is understandable why they are now attempting to do a live-action project where they can broaden the audience and tell a story in a new format. Given Amazon's track record on its genre shows, there is a reason to believe that they will spare no expense on producing the series. There is no writer attached yet or plot details so it's still too early to tell about the possible quality of the project and it might take years before we get to see it on our screen. Also, She-Ra has a huge fanbase so the people behind the project definitely have expectations to meet.
She-Ra made her first debut in the 1985 animated film He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword before spawning off her own animated series on She-Ra: Princess of Power. In 2018, a new animated series reboot was released on Netflix titled She-Ra and the Princesses of Power where it was praised by critics and commended for its LGBT representation.
