Netflix announced on the fourth day of its Geeked Week the release date for the anime adaptation Hiroyuki Takei’s Shaman King (2021).

The global premiere of Shaman King (2021) will be on August 9th. The first anime adaptation was released in 2001, in which the serialization of the manga was still not finished during that time. With the remake, fans are hoping for a better adaptation.

Shaman King tells the story of Yoh Asakura, a shaman-in-training. Shamans have the ability to see and communicate with gods, ghosts, and spirits. Yoh aims to become Shaman King. He has to fight in a tournament held once every five hundred years alongside powerful shamans to achieve this. A Shaman King will have the ability to call the Great Spirit and shape the world in however way they want to.

This shōnen manga was originally serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump between 1998 to 2004. The first anime adaptation by Xebec ran for 64 episodes. It ended in 2002, which means the original ending of the manga never made it to the anime.

The current adaptation by Bridge will run for a total of 52 episodes. The main cast includes Yoko Hikasa (K-On!, No Game No Life) as Yoh Asakura, Inuko Inuyama (Pokemon, My Hero Academia) as Manta Oyamada, Megumi Hayashibara (Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop) as Anna Kyōyama, Romi Park (Fullmetal Alchemist, Attack on Titan) as Ren Tao, Katsuyuki Konishi (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Fairy Tail) as Amidamaru, and Minami Takayama (Kiki’s Delivery Service, Danganronpa) as Hao Asakura.

Shaman King (2021) premiered on Netflix Japan last April 1 and is currently ongoing. The latest episode that has been aired was Episode 11. The 12th episode is scheduled for release on June 17 in Japan.
