Mark Hamill Discusses The Difference Between Disney’s Version Of Star Wars And George Lucas’ Version

George Lucas might have created Star Wars galaxy far, far away, but after working on the original and prequel trilogies, the Star Wars creator sold the franchise to Disney. Ever since then, Lucas has had little to do with the direction of the franchise.

Star Wars legend Mark Hamill has been at the center of the franchise for almost 40 years, so fans can trust the Star Wars actor when he tries to point out the key difference between Disney's approach to Star Wars and Lucas' approach.

"Remember, George had an overall arc (in the original trilogy)," Hamill explained in an interview with IGN. "If he didn't have all the details, he had sort of an overall feel for where the three were going."

Meanwhile, according to the Star Wars legend, Disney's version of Star Wars is "more like a relay race."

"You run and hand the torch off to the next guy, he picks it up and goes," the actor went on. "Rian didn't write what happens in [Episode IX] – he was going to hand it off to, originally, Colin Trevorrow and now JJ."

There's been a lot of talk and controversy over Disney's take on the Star Wars franchise after The Last Jedi tried to bring the franchise to a new direction. Fans didn't quite like how The Force Awakens sequel subverted their expectations, especially when it came to the characterization of Luke Skywalker. Many expected the character to appear in The Last Jedi as a benevolent Jedi Knight but instead saw Luke as a broken and cynical hermit. However, what fans fail to remember that the idea of a broken Luke was originally Lucas' own idea for Star Wars: Episode VII and many have been putting all the blame on The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson. Which is such a shame considering how critically-acclaimed the film is.
