The story follows a former U.S. Army medic Jill Adams who is working as a security guard at a local college. Since she is a recovering addict, she steals drugs in the research facility of the school to sell. After her shift ends, she picks up her kids Noah and Matilda from Doris, their grandmother. While she was driving home, her car lost power and they drove straight to the lake.

Upon retrieval, Matilda drowned but she was revived by a police officer who shared to them that the electricity and everything that uses it malfunctions. From then, everyone was unable to sleep – except Matilda. Soon, sleep deprivation kicks in and Jill and her family face an enemy hard to combat: the effects of losing sleep on people.

Others even want to sacrifice Matilda knowing she can sleep as they see her as a beacon of hope. People are starting to riot wondering what is happening. Doctor Murphy steps in to offer some help only to learn that she has some sinister plan on Matilda.

The Ending of Awake Netflix Movie Explained

By the latter half of the film, everyone is going insane, even Noah. He hallucinated and cut a wire resulting in his electrocution. Jill and Matilda tried to resuscitate him through a defibrillator but to no avail. The next morning, Noah woke up and he claimed he was dreaming. Matilda realized that they were able to sleep because they died but were brought back to life. They decided to drown Jill in a lake and as the film ends, they revived her and she awakens.

It was one chaotic film. Imagine being sleep-deprived for so long, you start seeing things that aren't there? The movie was brilliant in finding the "cure" to end the sleepless nights. Like a machine malfunctioning, sometimes, you have to kill the switch to restart it.

That is what happened in Awake.

In the end, they found a way to stop the mysterious plague of some kind of mass insomnia However, the cost is too much and the risk is extremely high as one has to die before being able to sleep again. To note, not all resuscitations are successful; one may finally sleep forever if it is not done properly.

So, have you watched Awake? It is now available on Netflix.
