A new live-action Superman series is coming and saving the world starts at home with Superman & Lois.
Clearing the air of rumors that started in 2016 is DC and The CW after an announcement made in late 2019 that a new Superman series is coming to television screens with Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch as Superman/ Clark Kent and Lois Lane respectively.
The CWVerse or Arrowverse is expanding with the addition of Superman & Lois to the roster of Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and more.
Here is everything we know so far about Superman & Lois:
Superman & Lois is a new series from The CW where Superman, DC comics icon, shares his married life with Lois Lane, an award-winning reporter. The series will be a spin-off of Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl as Kara Zor-El who is the cousin of Superman. Supergirl had to pause its productions due to the pandemic and is expected to air its final season soon.
The plot for Superman & Lois will focus on the Man of Steel, Clark Kent, and his wife, famous journalist Lois Lane as they face the pressures and complexities of being working parents to their twins, Jonathan and Jordan, who have yet to learn that their father is Superman and haven't manifested yet whether they have inherited superpowers from him.
The Kent family returns to Smallville to handle the family business as they are reacquainted by Lana Lang, Clark’s first love and a local loan officer, her husband, Kyle Cushing, the fire chief of the town, and their rebellious daughters, Sarah and Sophie.
The father of Lois Lane, General Samuel Lane, looks for Superman to save the day at a moment’s notice. A mysterious visitor appears in town who wants to prove that the world needs no Superman upends the quiet life of Clark Kent and his family.
The trailer of Superman & Lois was released showing the happy and blissful marriage of Clark and Lois but was cut by Clark losing his job at the Daily Planet. The trailer also showed the quiet and idyllic life of the Kent family in Smallville and the challenges the couple is facing.
The Kent twins are also introduced where they are in awe upon seeing their father manifest powers.
With the words “Saving the world starts at home,” the trailer sets a serious tone. The trailer shows a series of sneak-peaks of what Superman will be facing including the mysterious antagonist who hides his identity behind some suit with a cache of Kryptonite and a sonic weapon and is hinted to have originated from outer space.
Tyler Hoechlin will be reprising his role as Superman/ Clark Kent, and Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane who previously appeared on Supergirl, Elseworlds, and Crisis on Infinite Earths. Joining them would be their sons Jordan Elsas as Jonathan Kent and Alexander Garfin as Jordan Kent who would be opposites as Jonathan is the modest and clean-cut child while Jordan is wildly intelligent with a mercurial temper and social anxiety.
Cast includes Dylan Walsh as General Lane, father of Lois Lane, Emmanuelle Chriqui as Lana Lang, a childhood friend and first love of Clark, and Erik Valdez as Kyle Cushing, husband of Lana.
The villain of the story, albeit being considered as the mysterious stranger, will be played by Wolé Parks.
It has been confirmed that the series will have 13-episodes. Its pilot episode will have a special 90-minute episode which will be immediately followed by a 30-minute behind-the-scenes special entitled Superman & Lois: Legacy of Hope.
Unlike Smallville and Superboy which explored the origin story of Superman, Superman & Lois will be focusing on the adulting of Superman, a story reminiscent of Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher’s Lois & Clark.
Superman & Lois will delve into the challenges Clark and Lois will be facing as working parents to Jonathan and Jordan, who may have inherited powers from their father.
Showrunner Todd Helbing confirmed that the sons of Superman will be having different superpowers and Superman & Lois will delve into how Clark and Lois will deal with it as parents. Helbing added that because of “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” a remapped multiverse allowed them to have a blank slate for Superman & Lois.
Hoechlin’s Superman will also be wearing a different Superman suit than previous adaptations and Helbing expressed his excitement sharing that it will be really badass.
The series will be part of The CWVerse or the Arrowverse and will share a continuity with the rest of the shows on the slate. Should there be a second season for Superman & Lois, there might be crossovers from other Arrowverse shows.
Despite its release pushed back by the pandemic, Superman & Lois is set to premiere on February 23, 2021, at 8 pm followed by Superman & Lois: Legacy of Hope at 9:30 pm on The CW.
