In Snowpiercer, for 7 years, the remains of humanity were left to live in a train ride that never stops where the Earth is taken over by an arctic tundra, a literal ice age. When everything in the world seemed to have changed, the people did not as a social injustice ensues in the train and the social warfare for democracy remained.
The Earth was frozen to its core after an experiment of the scientists attempted to cool off the planet to combat global warming but the experiment was too potent that it became too effective for the planet to handle making the whole Earth covered with ice.
The last of mankind lives on a 1001-coach train circling the globe non-stop to utilize the high speed into producing kinetic energy to provide heat and power throughout the train. The train houses an artificial greenhouse that feeds off sunlight from artificial light in order to provide food for those aboard.
However, not all are treated the same as there are those living in the last coaches who pushed their way through survival since they did not purchase a ticket to board the train. The train was supposed to be only for those who can afford to live on it but when it was time to board, others squeezed themselves to ensure that they survive.
