A plane ride can already be scary on its own but Manifest will definitely make you think twice on the next plane you hop on as it follows the story of a plane that went missing without a trace for five and a half years only to return out of thin air and everyone on the manifest returned safely, or so they thought, as they started hearing voices and having visions. What exactly are callings?

Manifest is a series of NBC with episodes spanning for more or less 43 minutes each and one can catch the episodes through Hulu if the subscription includes an NBC pack, through the NBC app and NBC.com, or through the livestream on DirecTV, FuboTV, YouTube TV, and Sling TV. It is currently in its third season which will have a 13-episode run.

It is a story about 191 passengers on board Montego Air Flight 828 from Jamaica en route to New York City which mysteriously disappeared without a trace for five and a half years. They were all presumed dead considering the time that has lapsed. However, at Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, New York, the plane landed much to the surprise of everyone who wanted answers to what happened to them.

As far as everyone onboard was concerned, they were only gone for a few minutes experiencing severe turbulence. They try to return to their old lives only to find out that nothing is ever going to be the same. Some passengers started to hear voices and have visions of events that were yet to happen, a phenomenon they termed "callings."

What are Callings in Manifest?

Most often heard from Michaela and Ben Stone, Kelly and Patrick Taylor gave a term on what the passengers of Flight 828 are experiencing: Callings. These are voices they hear from nowhere, visions they see, and feelings they have urging them to do something about whatever the callings are concerned of.

As scary and as mysterious as it may seem, these callings have led some of the passengers to save another person's life, however, it could also lead them to another passenger's death like that with Kelly Taylor and Harvey Stein.

These callings are quite personal and cannot be disclosed to anyone who was not on the manifest of Flight 828 as being told could lead to some fatal consequence. For instance, when Rick Moore and the bartender were told about the callings, they both died after. In another example, Michaela Stone prayed that Jared Vasquez's life is spared after learning about a calling.

In Season 2 of Manifest, it has been debated whether callings are good or evil. Adrian believes that callings are the latter while the other thinks it is the former. Whichever it may be, the callings point to certain events which may be, directly or indirectly, connected to the person experiencing it. Whether it is saving another or a premonition of the death of someone, it certainly gives the one who heard or seen it a hint of what happens next.

It has been theorized that these callings are from their future selves, whispering to them of making a connection to them to be able to foresee what is to come. Whether this is true, it has not been revealed in the series yet.

Manifest arrives every Thursday at 7 PM CT/8 PM ET on NBC.
