Dr. Stone takes all the fans and viewers back to the stone age where the world is literally shackled in stones and it follows the story of a genius boy, Senku Ishigami, who got out of his stone enclosure and upon waking up to a stone world, he aims to free the rest of humanity from their stones.
The anime series is animated and produced by TMS Entertainment which, after gaining popularity and great viewership, secured a second season with the title of Dr. Stone: Stone Wars. The anime is aired weekly by both Funimation and Crunchyroll.
Dr. Stone follows the story of the Senku Ishigami and the modern world which was hit by a mysterious light some 3,700 years ago which turned everyone into stone. The goal of Senku is simple: take the world back to normalcy by bringing back all those petrified by stone out of their enclosures.
However, the journey is not that simple. It is not without any adversities as not all of the people who got out of their stones agree with the vision of Senku. He chances upon his nemesis, Tshukasa Shihiou, who believes that the world will only need the fittest to thrive and that only the fittest among all should be given a chance to survive.
The world gets divided into factions: The Kingdom of Science with the Ishigami Village, and the Tsukasa Empire. While the Kingdom of Science has been thriving to bring back some inventions from the modern world in preparation to attack the Tsukasa Empire, the latter, on the other hand, grows in numbers as they continue to advocate survival of the fittest.
The animated series sprung from the shōnen manga series of the same name by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Boichi which is published in the Weekly Shonen Jump. The series started in March of 2017 and is still ongoing according to the Dr. Stone website and Viz.
The manga series of Dr. Stone has many arcs which are divided into various Sagas: The Prologue Saga, Ishigami Village Saga, Stone Wars Saga, Source of the Petrification Saga, and The Truth Of The Petrification Saga.
The latest release of Dr. Stone was on Chapter 186 titled To Each Their Own Blade, which was released last February 21, 2021. To date, 15 volumes have already been compiled until Chapter 133. From Chapters 134 until the latest release, there is no compiled volume yet.
The manga series is still ongoing, however, the direction where the story is heading seems to indicate that it might be ending soon. The current arc of the series deals with the truth about the petrification of humanity. Because of this, some assume that the story is about to head to its conclusion.
Still, hopes are still up as the creators of the manga series released no confirmation whether the end is near for Dr. Stone.
Dr. Stone: Stone Wars anime series is currently following the Stone Wars Saga arc. It has 11 episodes all in all. It airs weekly every Thursday at 10:30 PM JST/ 8:30 PM EST via Funimation and Crunchyroll.
