Black Mirror is a well-known series, a critically acclaimed one, for the various social commentaries that it has to offer for the digital age. It follows an anthology format that tackles a new topic every episode with new faces and characters introduced. The show has five seasons and since 2016, it has been on Netflix. So, is it British or American?
The series has a variety of genres. It covers diverse topics which cover dystopian futures, use of technology from sci-fi, and it has some kind of speculative fiction going on. It is based on The Twilight Zone and the issues found in every episode are sometimes so scary, it is possible to happen, making the show a relatable one especially to fan theorists.
Created by Charlie Brooker, the show’s executive producer, Annabel Jones, also has some heavy involvement with what happens in each episode. However, their departure from House of Tomorrow caused some issues on the renewal of the show as regards the intellectual property rights on Black Mirror, and that left Season 6 floating in mid-air.
Black Mirror is a British series. It first aired on Channel 4 of the British Network before making the jump in 2016 on the streaming giant, Netflix. The first two seasons originally made their way on the small screen up until the special of Black Mirror. When it went to the streaming platform from Season 3 onwards, it easily picked up popularity worldwide.
The creator of the show, Brooker, is also from England. Brooker departed from the House of Tomorrow with co-showrunner Jones, and that led to some issues on the rights of the show. To date, the show is neither canceled nor renewed for Season 6. It’s just floating and as per Brooker, the pandemic may not be the right time for another run of Black Mirror.
It has been critically acclaimed, even receiving the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie three times in a row for San Junipero, USS Callister, and Bandersnatch. Many are considering that the show is one of the best television series the 2010s has. However, there were critics who consider that the morality in every episode declined in quality. Still, many are waiting for its return.
