Hortensia Saga is an Isekai anime series produced by Liden Films which is an adaptation of the free-to-play role-playing video game of the same name produced and developed by f4Samurai and Sega which follows the story of a medieval kingdom where the king is murdered by one of the dukes so he could rule the kingdom for himself.
Unknown to the duke, there is an heir to the throne who is coming of age in secret as the heir prepares to rightfully take the throne from the duke and rule the kingdom. Hiding as a man, she and those loyal to her begins the quest to save the kingdom.
The Kingdom of Hortensia is a powerful one comprising of its two main territories, Carmellia and Olivier. However, a revolt ensues in Carmellia and this threatens Hortensia as the arrival of monsters upends the power of the Kingdom.
Hortensia Saga anime series takes direction from Yasuto Nishikata, writing from Rintarō Ikeda, character designs from Takayuki Onoda, and music from Zenta.
The game where the anime series is based is titled Hortensia Saga: Ao no Kishidan which is a free-to-play role-playing video game for Android and iOS.
A free-to-play game is one which is also known as a free-to-start game which gives the players access to a significant portion of the game for free. As opposed to pay-to-play games which players would have to spend first before being able to play the game, free-to-play games allow users to play the game for free and it generates revenue from advertisements put on the game.
A role-playing video game or more commonly known as RPG allows the players to control the actions of the character of their liking while in a well-definer world and the character usually involves character development throughout the game.
Because of the game where the anime series is based, there is already an existing fanbase before the anime series ever began and the fanbase is carried over to the anime as players and viewers alike tune in to each episode of the anime series to find out whether the anime stayed faithful to the game many has loved since 2015.
As confirmed on the official website of Hortensia Saga the series will have 12 episodes all in all. This is later ensured by the Blu-ray and DVD release of the series which divides all the 12 episodes into three parts.
The first volume of the Blu-ray and DVD release will contain episodes 1-4, the second will have episodes 5-8, and the last volume will include episodes 9-12. Each will be a limited edition with a special digital jacket and will include a select game for each volume, bonus features like the opening video of the series and the game included, and the original soundtrack of the series.
The games to be included are Hortensia Saga Zero for Volume 1, Hortensia Saga Zero with the inclusion of a newly drawn 16UR Alfred, and luxury items for Hortensia Saga R for the Middle Volume, and Hortensia Saga Zero with 16UR Muriel and Hortensia Saga R luxury items for Volume 2.
Volume 2 also has the Hortensia Saga World Archive where it will hold the collection of setting materials.
Hortensia Saga airs weekly every Thursday at 11:30 PM JST/ 9:30 PM EST via Funimation.
