2018 is going to be a great year for Magic: The Gathering video games. We already know about the Hearthstone-like Magic Arena coming for the PC, and now, South Korean mobile giant and Wizards of the Coast announced that they're working on 'Project M', the codename for a new game for smartphones coming later this year.
As VentureBeat reports, Wizards and Netmarble called 'Project M' a "multiplayer battling game" in which "players show off their creativity and strategy as they battle across the planes of the Magic: The Gathering Multiverse." According to the companies, the game avatars will be "fully animated as they race across the battlefield to defeat their opponent." This is obviously a departure from the trading card mechanics of Magic: The Gathering, and it's more like Clash Royale. It looks like you'll be able to control Planeswalkers as your avatars in this game.
The game is being developed by the Netmarble Monster Studio, and its previous work includes Star Wars: Force Arena for mobile.
"Magic: The Gathering Project M is a strategic, multiplayer battler featuring fan-favorite Planeswalkers, creatures, and spells from Magic: The Gathering. It's still early in the process, but we'll be working closely with Netmarble to roll out specific details about the game as we get closer to release," Wizards exec David Schwartz wrote. "We are pleased to announce an all-new thrilling Magic: The Gathering game through our partnership with Netmarble, who has such an extensive track record of success and we are impressed with their progress on the game thus far."
It's interesting to see that Wizards of the Coast is expanding their Magic: The Gathering franchise beyond trading cards. Hopefully, they will announce a Magic: The Gathering live-action film as well.
