Yona of the Dawn, also known by the Japanese title Akatsuki no Yona is one of the greatest shojo anime for beginners and not only! Based on the ongoing manga of the same name, written and illustrated by Mizuho Kusanagi, the 2014-2015 anime adaptation by Studio Pierrot is a favorite with shojo fans, with an 8.04/10 rating on MyAnimeList.

For the uninitiated, Yona of the Dawn is a fantasy romance show about a sheltered princess who must take her fate – and her nation's – in her hands. Growing up in Kouka – a fantasy nation based on a combination of ancient Asian cultures – Princess Yona never had to worry about the future. But on her sixteenth birthday, her father is murdered by her treacherous cousin, Su-Won.

Yona must flee along with her bodyguard, Hak. The two find shelter in Hak's home, Fuuga, and learn about the Crimson Dragon King and four Dragon warriors who once unified Kouka. With nothing but this legend to guide her, Yona must try and save her nation, all while being pursued by Su-Won

It's been more than five years since the anime series finished airing, but this doesn't mean fans have stopped wanting more! With the manga still on the run and new chapters being released, anime fans haven't really gotten the closure they would have liked, and there's plenty of material for a Season 2. So, will there ever be a Season 2 of Yona of the Dawn?

After the anime show finished airing in 2015, there have been three OVAs with the last one having aired in 2016. After that, there has been no new content which likely caused some fans to believe there would never be a second season. However, after a few quiet years, discussions about Akatsuki no Yona Season 2 have started once more.

It should be noted that those who work on the story never intended to drop it. Unfortunately, the manga got delayed for some time, as the author was injured in the Kumamoto earthquakes. Now the manga is back on track and doesn't look ready to finish too soon. While there is no official release date for Season 2, there's plenty of material for one – or several. So far, there have been 33 volumes, out of which 8 were adopted in Season 1.

This in itself doesn't suggest that a Season 2 will necessarily happen, but not that the manga is released regularly again, rumors are plenty, and – given the success of Yona of the Dawn so far – not adapting the rest would feel like a missed opportunity. We will update you with more information should any announcement about the release date of Yona of the Dawn Season 2 is made.
