Jujutsu Kaisen, the 24-episode Studio MAPPA anime adaptation of Gege Akutami‘s manga of the same name is undeniably one of the most popular ongoing anime with a rating of 8.59 /10 on MyAnimeList. As is the case with most beloved anime shows, many non-Japanese speaking fans wonder if Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, a big possibility after the show's success, will be dubbed. We’ve gathered everything you need to know about the dub release of the shōnen anime.
But first, a little overview: Jujutsu Kaisen follows Yuuji Itadori, a high-school student who spends his days visiting his ill grandfather or aimlessly messing with the paranormal along with his two best friends. On his deathbed, Yuuji’s grandfather advises living in a way that will allow him to die surrounded by people, rather than alone.
Soon after, Yuuji and his friends are found to possess a cursed item: a finger belonging to a demon. By the time they find out, the curse is already loose and all Yuuji can think of to protect his friends is to shallow the finger, becoming cursed in the process.
From then on, he has to share his body with the demon Sukuna Ryoumen, which he handles particularly, narrowly avoiding immediate execution. Inspired to live by his grandfather’s last words, Yuuji must master his newfound powers and protect the world from even more dangerous curses.
Jujutsu Kaisen can be streamed on Crunchyroll, which might cause some newcomers to think that the show isn't dubbed, as Funimation is more famous for its SimulDubs. Add that to the fact that other beloved anime by MAPPA such as Dororo and Banana Fish don’t have official dubs and dubs for Jujutsu Kaisen would seem even further off.
However, there’s one thing missing from this equation: the show’s popularity. Against all odds, during an anime season that faced significant delays due to covid-19, not only does Jujutsu Kaisen have an English dub but it’s also dubbed in several other languages including Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, and Russian.
The English dub started in November 2020 and currently, the 14 first episodes are dubbed and available on Crunchyroll. Premium users can watch them all, while those streaming Crunchyroll shows for free can watch up to episode 13, with episode 14 becoming available to all after the release of episode 15. The rest will likely follow in due course.
At the moment, all cultural activities are often delayed due to the ongoing pandemic and the Jujutsu Kaisen team outdid themselves by offering a dub less than 2 months after the first episode's release. Supposing that by the time a second season is created we are at least approaching normality in everyday life, could Season 2 be a true Simuldub? Season 1 did set a high standard.
Of course, we can't predict anything with 100% certainty at the moment, as a second season is not even announced yet. But if and when it is, Jujutsu Kaisen will already be an established and beloved anime, so we have reason to be optimistic regarding Season 2 and its dub.
