Viola talks with her and the Duke's brother, a vain young man who is very insecure about his position as the family's second son. When he finds out that Viola is often visiting their eldest brother, he threatens to tell their mother, though he covers Viola for the time being.

A large part of the episode recounts Alice and the Duke's first meeting as young adults. Having grown up secluded and abandoned by everyone, the Duke used to be much lonelier, with poor social skills and no concept of taking care of himself. When Alice came to work as his maid, he initially tried to act cold, hoping to drive her away.

When she was able to go through with his impossible tasks, he decided to leave so that he wouldn't put her in danger, and he almost ended up falling asleep in the snow and dying. Alice finds him and reveals that she is so keen on taking care of him because he did the same for her when she was a sickly child with no friends. From there on, they decided to live together and support one another.

The Duke of Death and His Maid Episode 9 is set to be released next Sunday the 29th of August on Funimation. Unfortunately, no English dub has been announced at the time of writing, but we'll let you know if this changes in the following weeks.
