Since late March, Moriarty the Patriot is back on our screens for its second part. Since the first, 11-episode part of the show came to an end in December 2020, fans have craved more of the shonen mystery anime. So, just how many episodes is Moriarty the Patriot Season 2 going to have?
First, a little overview of the anime for any newcomers: this Production I.G. anime is based on a manga written by Ryosuke Takeuchi and illustrated by Hikaru Miyoshi, itself based on Sir Arthur's Conan Doyle's stories about Sherlock Holmes. The anime focuses on the early days of William James Moriarty, Holmes' future nemesis.
The story unfolds in the Victorian era, so you know what kind of aesthetic and sociopolitical conditions you can expect. As the British Empire grows, England is full of opportunities – but not for everyone. William James, who was adopted into the noble Moriarty family along with his brother Louis, is disgusted by the inequality and restrictive class system. Along with their foster brother, Albert Moriarty, the two decide to destroy this system, not hesitating to get blood in their hands to achieve this goal.
The show has been praised for its complex, morally grey characters and intricate plot, as well as the Victorian atmosphere – by no means new, but never failing to hook viewers. With these assets, many fans would like Moriarty the Patriot to have as many episodes as possible.
The show's exact number of episodes depends on whether you view the anime as having two separate seasons or a single larger season divided into two parts or "cours." The second part, which has started airing as part of the Spring 2021 Season, is often seen marketed as a Season 2 but – having aired just a few months apart from the first part – it is more of a cour – an 11-13 episode part of a larger season that becomes divided, with each part airing after a short hiatus.
The first part, which aired during Fall 2020, had 11 episodes, causing some to think the same will be true for part 2. Thankfully for those who can't get enough of the show, Moriarty the Patriot Part 2 will give them an extra two weeks of fun and mystery, concluding at 13 episodes.
The Moriarty the Patriot manga currently counts 14 volumes with the latest having been released only this April. It remains to be seen just how much the newest anime episodes will cover – and if more content is in the cards.
