Fruit Basket Season 3 Episode 7 Recap
Warning: If you have yet to watch Fruits Basket Season 3 Episode 7, you might want to skip to the next section: there will be spoilers below. Otherwise, you might want to refresh your memory, as a lot happened this week!
Episode 7 brought what I consider one of the most iconic moments of the Fruits Basket manga: one that is violent, infuriating, and heartbreaking all at once. After Rin's failure to obtain Akito's mysterious box. Ren takes the situation into her own hands.
The backstory reveals that Ren used to be a servant in the Sohma household, tending to the ailing Akira, the then head of the household. Eventually, the two fell in love and had Akito. But theirs was never a healthy relationship. Ren was so obsessed with Akira that she felt jealous of her own daughter, which partly explains her decision to raise Akito as a boy.
Akira dotted on Akito, letting her believe she was special and deserving of everyone's love. At first, this was innocent enough, but following Akira's death and Ren's rejection of her, Akito became entitled and started violently demanding the zodiac members' love. Due to Ren's abuse of her, she did not know any other way.
Back in the present, Ren forcefully tries to take the box Akito treasures. This was given to her by a servant immediately after Akira's death, claiming it contained Akira's soul - as is expected, of course, the box was empty as her words. Akito and Ren fight, until a familiar sensation makes Akito stop short. Following Momiji's release from the zodiac curse, Hiro's is also broken.
Following that, Akito completely loses control and stabs Kureno, before angrily running away. This, along with the revelation that Kyo knew Tohru's mom and potentially knows something about her death, has left us with one cliff-hanger too many. Episode 8 just can't come soon enough!
