86, the exciting new sci-fi project of Studio A-1 Pictures, hasn't even started airing yet but it's already one of the most anticipated anime of the Spring 2021 season. Based on a light novel series written by Asato Asato and illustrated by Shirabi, and its manga adaptation, 86 promises to be an intriguing story about otherness and the struggle for freedom and justice.
In a premise that might remind you of anime classics like Code Geass, we're introduced to the Republic of San Magnolia, which is at - a supposedly bloodless - war with the neighboring Giadian Empire, fought entirely by unmanned machines.
But you don't need to have watched mecha anime to know there's no such thing as a war with no casualties and oppression. The Republic's 85 known territories are defended sufficiently but there's a secret sector, the titular 86th. The 86th territory's youths are forced to fight in the supposedly unmanned drones - which means they are treated as less than human, with their lives always at stake.
When Lena, a noble military officer, becomes a Handler of a unit comprised of "86" warriors lead by Shinei, she gets to know them and understands their struggles. Together with Shinei, Lena uncovers the sinister nature of the Republic and its war with the Empire.

86 Episode 1 is going to be released on the 10th or 11th of April, depending on your timezone. There has been no official announcement regarding where the show will be simulcast but we will update this space once this information becomes available.

Unfortunately, it has yet to be announced where fans outside of Japan will be able to watch 86. Judging from previous experience we would suppose that, as a work produced by Aniplex, 86 is more likely to find a home in Funimation.
