Lucasfilm Story Group Explains Han Solo’s Golden Dice

Star Wars is celebrating its 40th anniversary today, and the internet has been flooded with new reports and images on the science fiction mega-franchise's upcoming film installment, Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Vanity Fair interviewed the cast and crew of the production for its May 31 issue, and to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Lucasfilm franchise, the publication released the cover story along with a slew of The Last Jedi photos online today.

While the publication's cover story focused more or less on the franchise's upcoming movie, Vanity Fair also covered a few fun and interesting things from older Star Wars films. This includes the golden dice Han Solo (Harrison Ford) has hanging in the Millenium Falcon's cockpit.

In an interview with Pablo Hidalgo, the Lucasfilm Story Group member explains the official origin of the golden dice, saying that the items are tied to the smuggler's history of gambling.

"The story that you would hear if you traveled to cantinas or watering holes around the Star Wars galaxy is that those dice were involved in a game of Corellian Spike—a dice-using version of a card game called sabacc. Rumor has it Han won the Millennium Falcon [from Lando Calrissian] with those dice. Whether or not that's just bar talk, I can't say."

Though dice don't really have to do that much in the main Star Wars saga, it's still a pretty fun story. It's also likely that fans might see those dice again in next year's spin-off movie Han Solo. After all, the Lucasfilm Story Group would probably want to let the film touch on how Alden Ehrenreich's young Han Solo gets a hold of the Millennium Falcon.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres on December 15, 2017.
