Lucasfilm Source Says That The Studio Is “Licking Their Wounds” After Solo’s Poor Performance

There have been a lot of Star Wars reports circulating online during the past few weeks, and according to one of the most recent rumors on the mill, Lucasfilm and Disney have begun trying to reconsider their approach to future Star Wars films after the poor box office performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Unlike many Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Lucasfilm's Han Solo spinoff failed to cross $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Even after a month in cinemas, the film has failed to go over $400 million at the global box office, sputtering at $353 million.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, President Kathleen Kennedy and her team are trying to figure out where the Star Wars Story spinoffs are headed to and what they need to do to make the films work.

"They haven't slowed down development," a source close to Lucasfilm says, "but they are licking their wounds."

Another Lucasfilm insider also adds that this doesn't mean that the spinoffs won't really happen, just that the studio is "trying to figure out how to make and market them differently."

This new report from THR falls in line with what Lucasfilm told ABC last week, saying that the studio is still working on films outside of the main Star Wars saga. Given that Solo is the very first Star Wars film to underperform, it would be too rash for Lucasfilm to put all of its spinoffs on hold. The studio will just have to see where it went wrong and then fix things for future Star Wars movies.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is currently screening in cinemas.
