LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens Writers Explain The Challenge of Adapting Film To Game

Last week, the LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens was announced with a new trailer, and it showed some cool footage based on the films with the added signature LEGO humor, which is a tough challenge for the writers behind the video game.

Graham Gorin and Phil Gray write the gameplay and cutscenes of the game, but work closely together to "try for a seamless" connection between the two, they said in an interview with GameInformer.

"I like writing idiots because I'm an idiot," Goring said. Gray loves writing the foot soldiers of the enemies the most for that reason. "Stormtroopers make spectacular idiots," he explained.

While they stick to the dialogues in the film, they described how they added sight gags in the movie. According to Gray, the scene between Kylo Ren and Rey on Takodana is especially "hard to adapt in terms of getting the tone right."

Goring said that the film is "very funny", making the game easier to adapt, but major death scenes are tough.

"Generally what we fall back on is that LEGO characters fall to pieces, and the pieces can sort of act on their own," Gray told GameInformer. "We don't know that Han won't come back. So he'll look like he's died, but you might see him in the background spinning off into space Darth Vader style, so that just in case he comes back in Episode IX as a head in a bucket, we're okay," he said with a laugh.
