In the first episode of the dark and bloody drama Joran The Princess of Snow and Blood, we are taken back in time to an alternate 1931 in Japan. In this era, the Tokugawa shogunate is still in power, with Prince Tokugawa Yoshinobu reigning supreme over Tokyo. A not-so-hidden secret, however, is that there is a group called Kuchinawa who wants to overthrow the government and assassinate the prince. What the people don't realize is that the government is aware of this group and has their own secret force who gets sent out to deal with them called Nue.
The main character of this series is a member of Nue named Sawa Yukimura who poses as a mild-mannered bookstore owner during the day, who looks after an adopted little sister named Asahi. At night, Sawa is sent out on missions to take out those who would do harm to the government.
In the first episode, we see Nue in action as it seems that there is a black market emerging for animals being smuggled into the country and melded with people to create powerful changelings.

At the moment, the only place to watch this series is on Crunchyroll. No other streaming services have announced plans to simulcast this series as of April 1st, 2021.
Joran The Princess of Snow and Blood is off to a stellar start and will tell a dark and violent revenge story with a touch of political intrigue thrown in. While it's too early to determine where the story is going to go, I like that it's throwing in some supernatural elements with the changelings and Sawa's hidden power. I also particularly enjoyed the cliffhanger at the end of episode 1. While I have no doubt in my mind that Sawa will be fine with the start of episode 2 (it wouldn't be much of a series if you kill the main character within one episode), I like that they are at least trying to build the suspense up.
This is looking like a series that I will want to keep track of, and I get the feeling that I'm not alone in that mood.
