In the first episode of Burning Kabaddi, we meet Tatsuya Yoigoshi, who was a star soccer player in junior high. Unfortunately, a string of unpleasant incidents with coaches, the media, and other players left him with a sour taste in his mouth when it comes to sports. Therefore, once he enters high school, he decides to live a life free of sports and devote himself to becoming a famous live streamer.

Unfortunately for Tatsuya, his reputation has preceded him and he is scouted by multiple clubs on the same day, including a team that plays the largely regional to Asia game, kabaddi. After being blackmailed into giving the aggressive full-contact sport a try, they rope him into joining the team against his will.

As of Friday, April 2nd, the only place to watch Burning Kabaddi outside of Japan is Crunchyroll. No other streaming service has announced plans to simulcast this series.

So for the most part, the first episode of Burning Kabaddi was set up and getting the main character on the team by any means necessary which leads to him being blackmailed into even giving the sport a try and coerced into actually joining the team at the end of the episode. The main problem with this series so far is that no one on the team is particularly likable at the moment.

Let's start with the main character who just wants to be left alone by anyone who isn't subscribing to his online streaming channel. Then you have the vice-captain who, as previously mentioned, blackmails Tatsuya into sticking around at the team practice. He's not inspiring a whole lot of confidence right off the bat. I mean, how bad is this team that this is the lengths they have to go through to find new members? Then you have the supporting cast who all do the always annoying random shonen yelling trope.

There are problems with this series that go beyond just the characters though, the animation in this series is definitely a problem area. To say that it is less than attractive is being generous. It's not quite an eyesore, but the character designs are quite rough, especially Tatsuya.

Burning Kabaddi failed to impress me with the opening episode, and I'm already having trouble mustering up much enthusiasm for the next episode.
