Well, this episode of Backflip!! was certainly a thing that happened.

In episode 5 of Backflip!! we take a break from training for any upcoming competitions for a good old-fashioned game of hide and seek. Yes, you heard me. With the whole school as their hiding ground, the two teams break off into groups and all hide from their pursuing captains. What starts as a simple game, however, ends up revealing much more about these individuals' histories.

Alright, it's time to have a serious talk about this week's episode because frankly, it wasn't great (did we really need a vaguely filler-ish episode in a series that is only scheduled to run for 12 episodes anyway?) but it also wasn't terrible as we learned some very interesting things about these characters in between a lot of other useless chatter.

Before we get to what we learned, however, how impressive was it that this episode was able to weave together at least four or five different conversations, all of which were about entirely different subjects, and make it all work together? In one corner we had sports talk, in another area of the school we had an argument about idols, and then another conversation about movies, and one more conversation about the past. It was crazy, but somehow this episode made it all work and that should be applauded for sure.

Now, as for what we learned about these characters; I think the two big takeaways belong in the corners with the sports and personal history chats. In one corner, we learned when Misato started doing gymnastics as well as why he started to drift away from it. In the other corner, we have the coaches who are talking about what happened back then with a hard hint being dropped regarding the leg of the coach of Ao High.

So despite this episode feeling like filler, you can definitely argue that it really wasn't because of what we learned along the way.
