When it was revealed that Smallville star Tom Welling would be making an appearance in Crisis on Infinite Earths, longtime fans of the show were in the hopes to see his character wear a Superman suit. Although Welling wasn't in the hero's costume for Crisis, as it turns, it would have been much better, because if he were asked to do so, he wouldn't even be in the crossover at all.

Welling did a cameo for the crossover event where it was revealed that his Clark Kent has given up his powers and is now living a simple life with Lois.

In a recent appearance at the Fan Expo Vancouver (via Angelika Diana), the actor admitted that he didn't even know what a multiverse was when he was asked to reprise his role in the event. However, he thought that the idea was good and was a "cool way" for his character to come back.

That being said, he would have hesitated to return if he was asked to wear a Superman suit. "It was not a part [of the pitch]," he said. "Had they started the conversation with ‘So, Clark is in the suit', I'd have been like [pretends to hand up the phone.]"

Welling said he was "just trying to protect Clark and the original idea of him being in high school" before he became Superman. "For me, I also thought that the Clark on Smallville, once he put the suit on, it was not Smallville anymore, everything became too easy," he added.

The actor did like the idea of him returning and for his character to be with Lois. "I don't know if anybody picked up on this, but somehow I got in the back of my head that I wanted to act more like Jonathan Kent-" Welling added. "-in that scene than I did Clark, because that's his father, and that's probably who he would have been influenced by."
