The Batman HBO Max Spinoff Series Will Be Year One Prequel

Announced back in July, The Batman's HBO Max spinoff series is set to "build upon" the film's anatomy of corruption in Gotham City and launch a new Batman universe. Plot details are still under wraps, but Matt Reeves recently confirmed that it'll take place during the first year of Bruce Wayne's career as the Dark Knight.

During the recent DC FanDome event, Reeves revealed the story will be told from one corrupt officer. "For me, the idea of this story was a story in which Gotham, which has this depth of corruption," Reeves said (via Geek Tyrant). "And then the idea that we could actually do a series that is going deeper into an aspect of it, which in this case is the corrupt police department and the corrupt inner workings of the city."

Reeves adds that the idea is to go back to year one because that is the beginning. "It's the first appearance of this masked vigilante that unsettles the city," he says. The cop who'll be telling the story is yet to be revealed, but he has been a cop "over generations." Reeves teases that the story will be a "battle" for this character's soul.

The show reveals that a "myth" is building in the background, with Reeves teasing that the story will touch upon characters from the comics and "totally new" ones as well. "You can go down this avenue and go into detail that you couldn't go into in the movie and go into these rich places and meet these characters [Boardwalk Empire creator Winter] Terrence is going to create."

For now, it isn't clear whether Robert Pattinson's Batman or Jeffrey Wright's Commissioner Gordon will make an appearance on the show but the idea of familiar faces colliding with new characters is certainly intriguing.

The Batman is set for release on October 1, 2021.
