It isn't a secret that Star Wars: The Last Jedi was divisive amongst fans and critics. It has a different director from its predecessor and successor with the addition of a few characters, and the absence of others; and now, one Star Wars actor reveals he was quite disappointed to not be in Episode VIII.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, actor Greg Grunberg, who plays the role of Snap Wexley, was asked if a backstory was developed for his character to explain why he isn't in Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi. "No, we didn't," he said. "That wasn't my doing."

"I was just like, 'Yeah, whatever they give me," the actor added. "Let's go back: When Episode VIII was announced and I did not get a call, I checked with J.J. [Abrams] and was like, 'I know you're not a part of this, but can you check since I haven't gotten a call?'"

Grunberg said it wasn't just him, Jessica Henwick and the other pilots were also asking if they had heard anything about appearing in the movie. "Rian just made a conscious decision not to bring back these other characters," he said. "And I was really bummed out about that."

That said, he did love The Last Jedi from a fan's perspective. "As a fan, one of the things that I love seeing is those smaller roles," he said. "Even if they're just passing by in a scene, I think it's wonderful."

Grunberg says he knew Abrams checked with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and with Johnson as well, it was "a creative decision" they made. "I loved Episode VIII; I thought it was great," he added. "So that was the saving grace for me even though I was disappointed. But, whatever, I was working on other stuff."

His character did return in The Rise of Skywalker, and though he didn't want Snap to die, Abrams went with it. Grunberg says his death sunk in when he was "kicked out" of the set in big group scenes.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be released on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD on March 31st.
