Fans have always known that Snoke seduced Ben Solo into turning to the dark side, but Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker revealed that Snoke was merely a puppet controlled by Emperor Palpatine himself. Though it was shown how the Sith Lord has manipulated Ben over the years, his fall to the dark side wasn't revealed on the big screen. Now, The Rise of Kylo Ren comics provides more insight as to how Palpatine managed to get Ben's fate sealed.

This article contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren #4.

In the final chapter of the Kylo Ren series, Ben embarks on a mission with the Knights of Ren on The Minemoon of Mimban. Ren takes out the innocent locals whilst Ben's former friends, Voe and Tai suddenly appear.

In an attempt to make Ben return to the light side, Tai lowers his saber and tries to talk to him. However, Ren has been observing the two and saw that Ben was having hesitations, which is obviously a setback to make his turn to the dark side. Then, Ren suddenly snaps Tai's neck using the Force, ultimately killing him.

Seeing his friend die in front of him fueled Ben's rage. To avenge his friend, he used the darkness and attempts to kill Ren. As Ben does this, he hears voices in his head, including Snoke. It is known that he was just a clone being controlled by Palpatine, and this panel shows how the Sith Lord gave Ben the last push to turn to the Dark Side and how long he has been manipulating him.

Falling deeper into the cave, all fired up, "Now you will be who you are," Palpatine tells Ben. "Who you were always meant to be." He urges Ben to "claim" his "birthright," and to strike Ren down, which he did.
