Robert Downey Jr. Admits He Didn't Have that Much Creative Control Over Marvel than Fans Thought

Robert Downey Jr. has been a household name of the Marvel franchise ever since he played the role of Tony Stark in the 2008 Iron Man movie. Since then, the actor has been pretty much central in the following movies. Downey is significant to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, hence, for many, they would think that the actor could have some sort of creative control in some parts of the production, but it looks like that's not exactly the case.

In a recent appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, Downey was asked if the actors meet up before actually committing to a role. For instance, if Downey ever wanted to meet who will play Captain America and see what the person's really like and deciding after. "I love that you think I had to have the authority [to say] ‘Did you cast this guy?'" the actor joked. "Alright, let me get a taste of him. I'll tell you if he can stick around."

"My M.O. is always 'Let's mind-meld. Let's get together. Let's work weekends. Let's spend time together,'" he added. Pointing out that "familiarity" can't be replaced, so they have to try and build it. "And sometimes, it happens very naturally. The whole Marvel universe - possibly without exception - just happens to be a really well-curated group of souls."

The actor's comments could be quite dispiriting for some, considering that he has played the role for a couple of years but haven't had the chance to get some creative control over some decisions.

As for Downey's potential return as Iron Man, he says starting up again "is off the table" since he thinks it would take a "super compelling argument" to make Tony Stark's return make sense. "But the other thing is, I wanna do other stuff," he added.

Iron Man's chances of returning is slim but fans could check out his first movie post-Endgame titled Dolittle which is set for release on January 17.
