Luke Skywalker's Death Presented a 'Problem' for The Rise of Skywalker

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker's release is just right around the corner. But before the conclusion of Skywalker Saga came into fruition, there were some challenges presented in The Last Jedi; and one of it was a character death.

In a recent interview with Awards Daily, The Rise of Skywalker editor Maryann Brandon talked about some of the production problems they faced in making the final installment. "All I can say about that is that The Last Jedi, I really enjoyed," she said. "But I will say, it did present a lot of challenges in terms of where Episode IX had to go to finish the saga."

With the unfortunate death of Carrie Fisher, and General Leia who "obviously" didn't die in

The Last Jedi,

her character "had to be figured out." Which Brandon admits, was a "huge challenge." However, she pointed out that J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio "did an amazing job."

On the other hand, Luke died in the movie, which was also a "problem." "So we had those two opposing problems," she continued. "So I think what you're seeing trend is that the setup was difficult to deal with."

Brandon thinks Rian Johnson is an "amazing filmmaker," and since they were doing a trilogy, they can't just "abandon a story." In short, the things Johnson decided to put in The Last Jedi, the things that are "dangling," need to be "dealt with" in The Rise of Skywalker. "And you have to deal with them honestly," Brandon pointed out. "So you thought the whole thing through."

For now, it is suspected that Mark Hamill's Luke would likely return in Episode IX as a Force Ghost. And based off of Brandon's comments, it looks like they won't be actually resurrecting the character in the upcoming movie.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20.
