It’s no secret that DC Universe’s Harley Quinn series is meta, making some references and jokes here and there. However, its latest episode takes it up a notch, poking fun at two fandoms about issues they are vocal about, those who hate Star Wars: The Last Jedi and those who are campaigning for the release of the Snyder Cut.
While the show takes place in Gotham City, Harley Quinn mostly focuses on its titular character, with very few appearances of the Dark Knight. That said, it’s latest episode, “Batman’s Back Man,” has a title that basically speaks for itself, along with a meta opening moment featuring two fanboys. One is wearing a “Release the Snyder Cut” shirt, criticizing the animated series as material for 12-year-old girls, but knows a lot about the plot. While the other is wearing a “The Last Jedi is Not Canon” shirt, saying that he has watched all five seasons of Gotham, and pointing out that he doesn’t have a problem with its approach to adaptation. You can check out the clip released by EW below!
Most people would be familiar with the writings on the guys’ shirts, given that ever since the movies Justice League and The Last Jedi were released there were some issues that sprouted from it. The Snyder Cut fandom has been campaigning for the release of Zack Synder’s version of the film. While most fans have good intentions and even campaigned through fundraisers, there are some trolls who try to weaponize the movement by making it an excuse against everything they don’t like with DC films. The latter, which Rian Johnson directed, has been a topic of debate amongst some fans, but there are also some people who focus on the negative aspects of the prominence of female characters in the film.
Of course, the clip isn’t making generalizations about those who want to see the Snyder Cut or those who weren’t happy with The Last Jedi, but it is a way to poke fun at those using these movements to spread negativity on social media.
New episodes of Harley Quinn get released every Friday on DC Universe.
