Ruby Rose's Kate Kane won't be returning for Batwoman Season 2, with Javicia Leslie's Ryan Wilder taking on the mantle. Now, things are heating up with the addition of Dominion star Shivaani Ghai in a major recurring role!
Deadline reveals that Ghai will play the part of Safiyah, a "fiercely protective ruler of a small community on the island of Coryana." She's said to have "as many enemies as aliases" and is "compassionate and charismatic" along with a "physical and psychological prowess." Safiyah will stop at nothing to protect what's hers and no one goes unnoticed by her, specifically those who have encountered the Desert Rose.
Ghai's Safiyah has been mentioned a few times on the show's first season. The first time she was name-dropped was on Episode 7 where she was revealed to be behind the hiring of Rifle to kill Batwoman.
The character originated from The Arms of Many Deaths comics series. The story sees Batwoman confronting the terrorist organization of the same name which happened to be ruled by Safiyah. It remains to be seen how Safiyah will factor into the plot for Batwoman's sophomore season with Kane's absence.
Aside from Dominion, Ghai's previous credits include The Catch,Five Days, London Has Fallen, Cleanskin, and Fireflies.
Batwoman Season 2 is expected to arrive in 2021.
