Kevin Conroy, who voiced the Dark Knight in Batman: The Animated Series, made his live-action debut as the iconic character in the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event. Apparently, not a lot of fans were happy with his version of the vigilante, who's actually much darker than he and the fans expected.
In a recent appearance on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast, Conroy responds to the backlash about his portrayal of Batman. "The fans were not happy about that. They didn't like seeing that version of Bruce Wayne," Conroy said. "But for me it was fun, it was a lot of fun to sort of stretch my acting chops a little bit."
Conroy played the Batman of Earth-99 in the Crisis event, an alternate reality of the character who went on a killing spree and was finally ended by a fatal encounter with Ruby Rose's Batwoman. The actor admits he wasn't able to prepare properly so he was nervous to play the part, considering that as he was only given a brief summary of the character.
"They didn't tell me anything about the Batman. They just said he was the Batman in the future, an old Bruce Wayne," the actor added. When Conroy asked if it's a Batman Beyond old Bruce Wayne version, he was told that the character isn't 80 years old but he is "older" and in "bad shape."
Conroy adds that the studios were "so guarded" with the script so he wasn't given anything until his flight to Vancouver to film the show. "I hadn't seen anything," he stated. "I said yes because I was so excited to do something on camera again [after] 25 years."
The actor was surprised by how dark his version of the Batman really is on the crossover, saying that he didn't know he was going to try and kill Supergirl. As for whether or not he'll play another live-action Batman, Conroy said he would "love" to. However, he says the studio does "like a movie a week," pointing out that it's a "massive undertaking."
