Jessica Jones’ Krysten Ritter on That Iron Man 3 Female Villain Issue

Female visibility has been an ongoing issue in Hollywood, and we see that more often than not in superhero movies and merchandising opportunities involved. There' quite a few movies from Disney that's involved in the issue, with The Avengers and Age of Ultron toys leaving out Black Widow and The Force Awakens merch excluding Rey from toy sets even though she's obviously the lead character of the movie.

Most recently, we saw more of the gravity of the situation during a recent interview with Iron Man 3 director Shane Black. In the interview, Black revealed that he originally planned a female villain for the film but it was scrapped by Marvel execs for fear that a female character would not sell toys.

Now, Krysten Ritter, who plays Jessica Jones in the character's Marvel-Netflix title series, is speaking up about the controversy while she was on the Late Show With Stephen Colbert (via Cinema Blend). The 34-year-old actress said:

Girls can sell toys. I don't know if there is [a Jessica Jones toy] yet, but there should be and I bet it would sell huge, and I'm gonna make some phone calls after this.

Ritter's is immediately challenging and appealing, and it's a clear picture of how women feel about representation in films.

While Ritter in her statement stands up for all female heroes in the entertainment industry, the issue stands, and I think Marvel, Disney, or any studio for that matter needs to solve it quick. There are a lot of bad-ass female characters in movies, shows, etc. that it wouldn't be a question whether they would sell merchandise. Good female characters simply shouldn't be negotiated just because of merchandise sales.
