Jeff Goldblum Spills Some Details on His Thor: Ragnarok Character, The Grandmaster

One of the most exciting things we can expect of Thor: Ragnarok is that it will introduce us to new protagonists, as well as villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Four of the nefarious characters we'll be meeting in the movie were officially announced last month – Cate Blanchett's Hela, Tom Hiddleston's Loki, Karl Urban's Skurge, and Jeff Goldblum's the Grandmaster. While we don't know much about the other antagonists in the movie, aside from Mark Ruffalo describing Hela as "so evil," we're now getting more insight into Goldblum's Grandmaster.

In an interview with Empire, the 63-year-old actor excitedly shared some details about the villain, saying:

He's a hedonist, a pleasure-seeker, an enjoyer of life and tastes and smells. I thought, ‘I can do that, I'll bet!'
I'm working on my part every day. I'm a sponge, researching.
[Director Taika Waititi] is encouraging me to improvise and make it my own, and that's what I'm trying to do. I hope he doesn't throw me out on the first day!

Well, from Waititi's good-natured personality, I don't think he'll be "throwing" Goldblum out on the first day of shooting.

Goldblum also told Empire that he's expecting "three weeks or a month" of principal photography in Brisbane, Australia, adding:

Not only Chris Hemsworth, Cate Blanchett, Anthony Hopkins… jeez, that's gonna be fun. I've never been to Australia except to do these little publicity things.

While this could mean that the Grandmaster probably won't be getting enough screen time in the movie, it appears Goldblum's script for the character will be faithful enough to the comics, where he's portrayed as someone who enjoys the finer things in life.

Undoubtedly, Thor: Ragnarok won't be the last movie where we'll see the Grandmaster. Just like Loki, the character has manipulated many characters in the Marvel Universe, and it would be fun seeing him in action in future MCU films. Infinity War maybe?

Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on November 3, 2017.
