Eternal Weekend's Vintage Championships just happened, and for the first time in the history of Wizards of the Coast's popular trading card game, someone just attacked a 3/3 Alpha "Black Lotus" for lethal in the Top 8 of the Vintage tournament.
During the Top 8 match between Joe Brennan and Jody Keith, Brennan ended up attacking his Alpha "Black Lotus" that was turned into a 3/3 Elk thanks to "Oko, Thief of Crowns" from the latest MTG set Throne of Eldraine for lethal to win the entire match. Of course, he was able to transform "Black Lotus" into a 3/3 Elk creature with Oko's second ability that turn any creature or artifact that way.
Watch the clip below:
While it's amusing to see the most expensive MTG card ever swing for lethal, it's not surprising to see Oko dominate the Vintage format since it's an artifact-heavy format. In fact, five of the Vintage decks that made it Top 8 played Oko.
Even MTG hall of famer Luis-Scott Vargas (LSV) tweeted this historical moment:
Say what you will about Oko, but he has given us the gift of Black Lotus attacking for lethal in the Top 8 of Vintage Champs. pic.twitter.com/O7bIwcev7p— Luis Scott-Vargas (@lsv) November 3, 2019
Vintage may be the format that lets players use the most powerful cards from the game's oldest sets but this moment shows that a new overpowered card like Oko can make an impact in its meta.
