German video game company Daedalic Entertainment has announced its upcoming game, Lord of the Rings: Gollum. The narrative-focused action-adventure game will center on the popular J.R.R. Tolkien character after he acquired the One Ring but before the events of The Lord of the Rings books and films.
Daedalic partnered up with Middle-Earth Entreprises - the company that owns the rights to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings - to produce this game. This will be the first game produced as part of the deal, and more games are expected to be announced.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Daedalic CEO and co-founder Fichtelmann explained why Gollum was chosen as the game's protagonist. "You already have that big conflict in the character, two voices talking to you continuously, which means there is a good reason there are decisions to make in the game: the Smeagol decisions or the Gollum decision."
According to Fichtelmann, his company was able to secure a partnership after "it was clear that the Tolkien estate looked for a company that was capable of doing something which is more story-orientated than some of the other products that came out over the last years." He may be referring to the violent games, Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War.
During an interview with Daily Star, Fichtelmann explained the gameplay choice for Gollum: "Since this is a game about Gollum, if you imagine gameplay, stealth is the obvious choice as opposed to combat with a sword,"
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be available on PC and "all relevant console platforms at that time." The game will also be released in the same year as Amazon's The Lord of the Rings series.
