Rogue One Writer Reveals Lucasfilm's Top Secret Writing Restrictions

Right after Disney purchased Lucasfilm, a new story group of writers and multiple filmmakers have been developing various Star Wars projects, and the story beats are no longer just being kept by George Lucas alone. With the internet having a larger presence these days, Lucasfilm has to take more precautions to prevent leaked story details and rumors from ruining stories in the Star Wars Universe. To keep things under wraps, Lucasfilm established a protocol for those involved.

During a spotlight panel at Salt Lake Comic Con's FanX 2017 (via Comicbook), Rogue One screenwriter Gary Whitta revealed some details about the various precautions Lucasfilm takes when dealing with creative aspects of future projects.

"Working for Lucasfilm is like working for the CIA," Whitta said.

Whitta talked about he he got the gig to pen the script for Rogue One. Lucasfilm SVP for Development Kiri Hart reached to him him and told him a password-protected document was being sent over. After getting the document, he'd receive a phone call with a 16-digit passcode to unlock it. Whitta stayed in his house for most of the day waiting for the call but left for five minutes --that's when Lucasfilm called. Whitta ran back inside only to hear a voicemail saying they'd give him another call on Monday.

Whitta, who "spent the whole weekend bouncing off walls", tried to guess the passcode of the document but failed to crack it.

When Whitta finally received the call and the password, he unlocked the document only to learn that the project was for Rogue One.

Rogue One is now available on Digital HD, Blu-ray and DVD.
