New Tolkien Trailer Features Smaug and The Fellowship

FOX Searchlight

FOX Searchlight has released the new trailer for the Tolkien, the biopic about the life of the author of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. The trailer really wants to remind fans that J.R.R. Tolkien wrote those epic fantasy books, and sometimes it looks less like a biopic and more like a strange re-imaging of Peter Jackson's films cut into a period drama.

The second trailer for Tolkien shows more of the young writer's years at the university as he falls in love and discovers his passion for language. Tolkien (played by Nicholas Hoult) tries to deal with love and friendship before facing the horrors of World War I. The trailer also shows flashes of fantastical creatures inspired by the war like the Ringwraiths and the dragon Smaug. At the end of the trailer, Tolkien describes his bond with his friends as "The Fellowship" to remind fans of The Lord of the Rings that this film is connected to those epic fantasies.

Tolkien also stars Lilly Collins as Edith, Tolkien's wife, as well as Anthony Boyle, Colm Meaney, Patrick Gibson, Craig Roberts, Tom Glynn-Carney, Laura Donnelly, Pam Ferris, Derek Jacobi, and Genevieve O'Reilly.

Directed by Dome Karukoski from a script by David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford, Tolkien is set to release in theaters on May 1.
