Magic: The Gathering Theros Beyond Death Trailer Teases A Conflict Between Two Planeswalkers

The official trailer for the upcoming Magic: The Gathering set Theros Beyond Death has premiered at the 2019 The Game Awards, and it introduces a conflict between two planeswalkers: Ashiok, nightmare weaver, and Elspeth Tirel. The last time we saw Elspeth was in the last Theros block, having been slain by the god Helios after serving his wishes as he feared her ability and power to kill deities on the Greek mythology-inspired plane. Ashiok was most recently featured in War of the Spark, the set that featured many planeswalkers in an epic war between The Gatewatch and Nicol Bolas in Ravnica, but didn't have a starring role in the story.

The trailer establishes Ashiok as a new villain even though their motives are mysterious. Since the fall of Nicol Bolas in War of the Spark, fans have been waiting for a powerful antagonist, and it looks like Ashiok can fill that role well.

The trailer teases a conflict between Elspeth and Ashiok as Elspeth tries to escape the underworld of Theros now that she has been killed by Heliod, and it looks like things get intense quickly, with Elsepth getting dragged underneath water before her spark seems to reignite before the trailer ends.

Theros Beyond Death, the 83rd Magic: The Gathering expansion, is set to release on January 24, 2020. Prerelease events will take place on January 17-19.
